I’m not really a clubbing kinda girl – I like to have a drink but I also like to know how I am getting home and be in full control, which usually means driving, and not much vino!!
When it came to planning my hen do I think the girls were worried…. I am rather impatient and know exactly what I want! As soon as we got engaged everyone labelled me with ‘THE BRIDEZILLA’ and Yes I do know what I want, Yes I want it yesterday and yes I did have a pinterest board for every aspect of our wedding when Shaun was just my boyfriend!!! BUT somehow I do think I escaped the whole BRIDEZILLA thing!
I said to the girls I would quite like my hen to be a surprise – so we got together and chose the date and who would be invited. That was my only input… Now for the girls to work their magic!!!
Friends were saying to me how excited they were for the hen and I would get that little bit more excited as I really didn’t have a clue. For me it worked perfectly not knowing, I am a hard person to surprise and although I loved planning every bit of the wedding it was nice to have the hen party covered and I could just sit back and enjoy.
The week rolled round in May and I was told I couldn’t go with the girls so chose to spend the day with Shaun’s cousins. Prosecco lunch & manicures had, we were on our way & I was feeling rather tipsy!!! The girls surprised me with all the hen party paraphernalia, which is my worst nightmare but actually after all that prosecco I was ok with it!!! The car was covered in banners and I had 2 ‘lovely’ helium balloons one of which was a very fitting willy!! Head to toe in white polyester: veil, badge, garter, and sash! You name it I was wearing it!! This was it – the start of my OWN hen weekend!
Laughing the whole way we pulled into the drive of a gorgeous barn conversion just outside of Bath. We had arrived and the majority of the girls were there. The barn was covered in bunting and balloons, it was literally my dream home!
Music was playing, hot tub was bubbling. Everyone had now arrived and we had a toast to me – eek!!! I hate being centre of attention! A takeaway was ordered but I was too fizz happy by that point so dancing it was.
It got to a point where I had hit a wall and snuggled onto a sofa trying to hold a conversation with some of the girls – I was asleep!!! But the party didn’t stop there!!! I awoke at about 4 am to a ‘cock-a-hoop’ strapped to my head & drawings all over my face and arms!!! I managed to fling the cock across the room and slowly, slowly make my way upstairs to bed without being sick!!
The morning light woke me at approx 7am, there I was snuggled in bed next to one of my bridesmaids! Full face of makeup plus all the additional writing and drawings, I removed my false lashes and slowly made it to the bathroom – the scrubbing began and actually the splashing of water on my face felt rather refreshing! I again very slowly made my way downstairs and popped the TV on. Not many were up so I just had a little time to chill and try to not be sick!! Breakfast was served as and when people got up and everyone could just decide what they fancied!! I was in no position to be eating breakfast so just sat it out with a cuppa instead! Once everyone was up the girls told me what we had planned for the day……. We had beauticians coming to the house to give us all treatments!!! Yay this is just what I needed and this is certainly turning into my perfect hen! The beauticians arrived and set up in 2 rooms, the girls had already chosen their treatments and they had chosen a back massage and a file and polish for me! We all just sat around chatting/recovering each taking our turn to go and have the treatments, some in the hot tub, some on the sofas, some still in bed!!!
Everyone really enjoyed their treatments and I was last to go… I was told once my treatments had finished I had to go upstairs and wait until someone came to get me!!!! Off I went up the stairs and thought I ought to get out of my PJ’s and make myself a little more presentable… A little make up on and some proper clothes I get the call… I walk down stairs into an afternoon tea with cakes, fizz, scones, sandwiches, etc which all looked just delicious! Before we tucked in, my bridesmaids said a few words and gave me a little bag of gifts! They had made me a gorgeous frame which everyone had signed, some more fizz (always welcome!) and THE MOST gorgeous clutch bag from Will Bees – with my new initials engraved into the leather. So special and such lovely pressies. I really wasn’t expecting it! Food was just delicious and just what we needed after our treatments, who doesn’t love sandwiches, cakes & scones all at once?
A few of my friends had recently had babies so it was lovely that we were reasonably close so they could come for the day and join in on the celebrations but were able to get home to their little bundles at a sensible time…
For the evening we jumped in taxis and made our way to Bath for a meal and drinks, we had a lovely meal in Cote and followed on with drinks in a few bars. Bath is such a lovely city and it really is perfect for a hen party. With rolling hills on its doorstep you really could have any type.
Sunday we tidied up and left the house looking neat and tidy ready for its next visitors and I shut the door with the most amazing memories of my hen party! Same again next year???
